How does it work?

Commuting Options

  • Walk the easiest and most convenient alternative commute, and it is free! If you live close enough to work, try walking during the month of May.
  • Bicycling Just 20 minutes of bicycle a day will reduce the risk of diabetes, lower blood pressure, improve your mood, and keep you feeling energetic.
  • SMART Busses With 43 routes, SMART connects residents of Macomb County and parts of Wayne and Oakland County to work, medical appointments, shopping, and families.
  • Carpool MiRideShare Free carpool matching service. Commuters can save $3,000 a year just by sharing a ride to work. Sign up for “commuter insurance” with the Guaranteed Ride Home Program and the MichVan.
  • Detroit People Mover The People Mover is a fully automated light rail system that operates on an elevated single-track loop in Downtown Detroit.

Commuting Rules

  • Eligibility The Commuter Challenge is open to any individual who works or goes to school in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Livingston, Monroe, or St. Clair counties.

  • Challenge Period The Commuter Challenge runs May 1st to May 31st.
  • Requirements All participants in the Commuter Challenge must register and create an account or use their existing Commuter Challenge account to track their eligible commute trips. All logged trips will earn one entry for the month-long prize drawing. Failure to respond to email within 14 business days will forfeit the prize, and Commuter Challenge will draw another winner. All prizes must be claimed within 30 days of notice, at which time they will be considered forfeited.
